Retailers Mutual's roots go back to 1981, the year the Michigan Retailers Association established Retailers Fund. That group self-insured fund was created specifically to help retail businesses lower their costs of workers' compensation insurance.

Retailers Fund was a big success. But the narrow regulatory environment in which self-funded groups must operate meant that many businesses were not eligible to participate. So, Retailers Fund was converted to Retailers Mutual, a full-service mutual insurance company.

Now, a wide range of Michigan businesses are eligible to purchase workers' compensation insurance from Retailers Mutual. You don't need to be a retail business to become a Retailers Mutual policyholder.
